Summary of the issues discussed:
The meeting marked one year since the ‘Unheard: Women’s Journey Through Gynaecological Cancer’ report was published. The meeting revisited this work and heard how the patient experience helped shape the report as well as what was still needed to be done to improve these experiences. Presentations were given by patient campaigner, Claire O’Shea, from Claire’s Campaign, who outlined the campaign, patient experience of the gynaecological pathway in Wales, and how the experiences of women with gynaecological cancer in Wales shaped the ’Unheard’ Inquiry. In addition, members of NHS Wales (NHS Wales Executive) presented an overview of the National Cancer Recovery Programme, and how this relates to the gynaecological pathway and recommendations made within the ’Unheard’ report.

Summary of the issues discussed:
The meeting discussed the evidence and rationale behind robust cancer policy setting, in relation to cancer plans and strategies, and the components that support such approaches. The meeting heard the work of the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership (ICBP), and how countries with robust cancer plans in place have seen greater improvements in cancer outcomes over time. An introductory presentation was provided by Samantha Harrison, Cancer Research UK’s ICBP lead, about the work of the ICBP and its research modules. This was followed by a presentation from Professor Ellen Nolte, from of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who conducted the ICBP’s module in relation to how cancer planning has helped improve cancer outcomes amongst ICBP membership countries and jurisdictions.

Summary of the issues discussed:
The meeting focused on the less survivable cancers in Wales – lung, pancreatic, liver, brain, oesophageal and stomach cancer. The session heard from the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce’s Wales-subgroup about progress made over recent years across the less survivable cancers in Wales. It also heard from the Chief Executive Officer of Pancreatic Cancer UK about the challenges facing patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and opportunities on the horizon to improve earlier and faster diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in Wales.
The CPG for Cancer met with the group’s external members (as outlined on page 1-2) throughout the course of the year’s formal meetings.
